Towed Vehicle Locator Initiatives
Towed Vehicle Locator Initiatives
Connecting the Dots
The Towed Vehicle Locator Initiative took root in 2007 when law enforcement agencies in Southeast Texas decided to participate in a piloted, cross-jurisdictional effort to help citizens locate missing vehicles. Typically, law enforcement agencies in municipalities and counties do not have the processes or technology in place to share information about missing, stolen, abandoned or towed vehicles across multiple jurisdictions.
Often vehicles stolen in one jurisdiction are abandoned (and subsequently towed) in another. Because jurisdictions can’t share information about towed vehicles, if a stolen vehicle report is filed after the missing vehicle is towed, it’s likely that the law enforcement agency accepting the stolen vehicle report will be unaware of the fact that the missing vehicle has already been recovered and is sitting in storage. As a consequence, the owner of a stolen vehicle may not locate their vehicle for days, or even weeks, resulting in added costs and inconvenience for the vehicle owner, and the owner’s insurance company, as well.
The Towed Vehicle Locator Initiative connects the dots and enables disparate law enforcement agencies to easily locate vehicles that have been towed in neighboring jurisdictions. The Towed Vehicle Locator Initiative dramatically reduces the number of erroneous stolen vehicle reports as well as the time required to locate a missing vehicle.
The cornerstone of this program, VINS, enables high-speed, cross-jurisdictional information sharing on a regional basis through a secure data repository accessed over the web and hosted on 3rd party infrastructure - no hardware or software to purchase or install. The system is easy to use and readily adaptable to existing departmental policies and procedures.
Today, Towed Vehicle Located Initiatives are available or being rolled out in the following areas:
• Southeast Texas
• Southern California
• North Carolina
• Greater Atlanta Metropolitan Area
• Greater Albuquerque Metropolitan Area
